Levina was baptized in Washington Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Since John followed his sweetheart to Ohio from New Jersey, it is likely he was also from the same area.
The first map below shows the present-day location of Warren County in New Jersey. The second map shows the location of Washington Township within Warren County. [Note: The precise boundaries of the township and county may have changed since Levina was born (1824).]
By May 1848, Levina's father Francis Mettler (#43) had moved his family by wagon from New Jersey to Ohio. The map immediately below shows Ohio county borders as they existed in 1850. Between 1848 and 1880, John and Alvina lived in at least three Ohio counties (Hocking, Ross, and Pickaway), as indicated by censuses.
The 1850 Census shows John and Levina were living in Laurel Township in Hocking County. Ohio. On the map below, Hocking County is green; Laurel Township is indicated with a red rectangle in that county. The 1870 Census shows John and Levina were living in Scioto Township in Ross County, Ohio. Ross County is pink on the map; Scioto Township is indicated by the red rectangle in that county. The 1880 Census shows John and Levina were living in Washington County in Pickaway County. On this map Pickaway County is yellow; Washington Township is indicated by the red rectangle in that county. Maps below this one show more details of the counties and townships. [Note: Those maps are current maps and township and county boundaries probably changed during the time John and Levina were living.]
Below: Laurel Township, Hocking County: the 1850 location of John and Levina. The Census shows that they were living next door to Levina's father.
Below: Scioto Township, Ross County: the 1870 location of John and Levina.
Below: Washington Township, Pickaway County: the location of John and Levina in 1880.
The map below shows more detail of Washington township, including the location of Morris United Methodist Church Cemetery (#88) where John and Levina are buried and the location of the town of Thatcher, where they had lived. Both are highlighted in yellow. [Note: The statement on the map below that it was donated to this website is untrue. This was copied from another online website.]
